The name "invention" is usually applied to various kinds of polyphonic compositions.
The first piece in this cycle fully satisfies this definition; in the remaining pieces polyphony also plays an important role, but their most important feature is a somewhat unusual (at least for Kapustin) harmonic language.
In the early 90s he composed several works in a similar style whose harmonic system is best described by the long-accepted term "extended tonality". This period in his life did not last long, five years at most, after which he stopped experimenting with harmonization and returned to normal tonality.
Except for the first and last, each piece has a simple three-part structure. The performance of this opus requires a lot of concentration, as well as virtuosity in the faster pieces.TUTGXS1088435
